| 15 | 8888.0072.0000.00 | documents | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Tro | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Trott collection is divided among two categories: advertisements and correspondence relating to the companies that he advertised for while running an ad business in Annapolis in the late 1940s to early 1950s, and articles and internal correspondence for Chesapeake Appreciation, Inc., the group in charge of Chesapeake Appreciation Days (CAD). Trott worked with the CAD in the late 1970s when employed by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. Additional materials in the collection include miscellaneous papers from his stint as an advertising man for The Skipper magazine, papers collected while active with the Annapolis Power Squadron, and one document from his brief career as a yacht broker. Biographical BackgroundMr. Lester R. Trott, (born 1918) was involved throughout his life in several aspects of maritime business and promotion on the Chesapeake Bay. A lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland, he is a life charter member of the Annapolis Power Squadron dating back to the early 1940s. Starting in the late 1940s he started his own advertising firm, Lester R. Trott, Advertising, which handled promotion and advertising for local businesses. His principal account was for Chesapeake Vacation Cruise of Annapolis but also included Weems Navigation, Tidewater Cruises [?] (of Ephrata PA), John Trumpy & Sons, and many others, not necessarily maritime. He is also one of the founders of the magazine The Chesapeake Skipper (later The Skipper), the first yachting magazine on the Chesapeake (first issue July 1947). After closing his business he joined the staff, working as production manager from December 1951 to February 1952 and thereafter in advertising sales with Henry T. Meneely until March 1953. Leaving the magazine he started another business, this time as a yacht broker. At the time there was only one other yacht broker in business in Annapolis - Annapolis Yacht Sales. Among the boats he handled distributionship for was the Little Mariner, a small plywood outboard cruiser made by Mariner Cruiser of Maryland. He closed the brokerage and returned to the magazine in November 1956 as advertising manager, remaining there until July 1961. Thereafter, he worked as a director of special events and the special projects manager in the Maryland Department of Economic and Community Development, Division of Tourist Development. One of the projects he helped promote was the Chesapeake Appreciation Days, strongly represented in this collection. He remained in this capacity until retirement in 1980. Brewington Collection:1930s-1950sThe collection is comprised of correspondence, research notes, ship plans, Yachting articles, newspaper clippings, draft manuscripts, and photographs concerned with Brewington's Chesapeake Bay related publications.Biographical BackgroundMarion Vernon Brewington was born at Salisbury, Maryland, on 23 June 1902 and died on 8 December 1974. As a youth, he worked as a hand on Chesapeake Bay vessels. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1925, he worked as a banker in Philadelphia. With the onset of World War II, in 1942 he was commissioned in the Naval Reserve and served in the Navy Department's Naval Records and Library. After the war he held the position of Acting Curator of the Naval Historical Foundation in Washington and Curator of the maritime collections at the Maryland Historical Society. In 1956 he assumed the posts of Assistant Director and Curator of Maritime History at the Peabody Museum of Salem, Massachusetts. In 1966 he accepted the Directorship of the Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, Massachusetts. He retired in the summer of 1974 to work on a cataloguing project at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Connecticut. A prolific writer, he produced some of the most important works on Chesapeake Bay maritime boatbuilding and history. The American Neptune, XXXV:1 (January 1975)Scope and ContentThe collection represents Brewington's research methods. The range and type of material reflects the author's meticulous search for details regarding all aspects of the Chesapeake Bay's vernacular watercraft and shipping. The majority of information was collected during the period 1930-1950, though some documents exceed this date. Many of the documents, newspaper abstracts, and notes examine general information regarding eighteenth- and nineteenth-century shipbuilding and maritime commerce. Most of the correspondence deals specifically with information regarding late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Chesapeake Bay vessels. The ship plans preserve specific designs of Chesapeake Bay related watercraft. Subject: Marion V Brewington | No image URL. | View | |||

| 18 | 8888.0010.0000.00 | documents | Herman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976) Photo Collection | 1890-1970 | Herman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976) Photo Collections (1890s--1970s) Biographical Background: Herman Hollerith, Jr. was born in 1892 at 3112 Q St., Georgetown, District of Columbia to Herman Hollerith, Sr. and Lucia Talcott Hollerith. His father invented the punch-card tabulating machine. He sold his company in 1911 to a firm that later became IBM. Other Hollerith children were Nan, Richard, Charles, Virginia and Lucia. The family lived in Georgetown, Garret Park and Montgomery County. In 1908 they bought a summer home in Mathews County, Virginia named Brighton. They spent their summers at Brighton from 1909. The family had a number of boats which were kept at Brighton: a New England dory named LUVINA; a flat bottomed power workboat named BRIGHTON; a 45 foot, gas powered yacht named REGINA, which was later renamed LUVINA and later still renamed MATOAKA, and an 85 foot vacht named LUVINA. The name Luvina was derived from the three daughter's names, Lucia, Virginia and Nan. Herman Hollerith, Jr. attended Worchester Polytechnic College with his borther, Charles, and received an engineering degree in 1917. He worked at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia, and then at the Victor Talking Maching Company, where he was chief engineer and production engineer. During this time he lived in Riverton and Moorestown, New Jersey. He quit the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1928 when it was purchased by RCA. From 1932-1936 Hollerith was president of the Virginia Navigation Company and operated a small passenger steamer under contract to a large corporation. From 1936-39 he did not work during the Depression. In 1939 he moved to Baltimore to work for the Glenn L. Martin Company where he was involved in building airplanes during WWII. Hollerith worked until he was 69 years old. He was married twice. He and Sarah Valentine Fox had four children and were divorced in 1936. In 1938 he married Elisabeth C. Guest. In 1954 he bought a house near Oxford, Maryland and retired there in 1961. Hollerith was active in the early days ofnthe Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and was instrumental in the move of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse to the grounds. Hollerith had a love for boats and owned the ERIC, launched in 1925, until his death. This sailboat was an Atkins design based on a Norwegian ketch. ERIC was the prototype of the Westsai1 32. Hollerith died in 1976. For more information about the Hollerith family researchers should consult: HERMAN HOLLERITH: FORGOTTEN GIANT OF INFORMATION PROCESSING, by Geoffrey D. Austrian; NY: 1982, Columbia University Press. Scope and Content: This collection consists of photos taken or collected by Hollerith. The bulk of photos were taken by Hollerith of scenes from 1915-1940. They feature steamboat and sailboat scenes on the lower Chesapeake. Many of the photos were taken on cruises around Mathews County, Va. Some photos (especially M series negatives) were collected by Hollerith and taken by his father and brothers. The photos depict the agriculture life of the lower western shore and often show the introduction of power. Many of these photos have been published. The water was an important focus for life in Brighton. Mrs. Elisabeth Hollerith supplied a quote from Hollerith about life in Brighton: We did everything by boat, used the daily steamer from Norfolk for transportation to and from Washington and for most supplies including ice. Met the steamer at one of the wharves on the East River each day to pick up mail, visiting friends, etc. The roads were so bad we rarely went inland. Went to church and to visit our friends in a motor boat. In addition to the following subject indices, the researcher should note that Hollerith had his own subject indices. These are available to researchers and especially useful in looking for boat names. They are stored with the negatives. Subjects:Airplanes; Caribbean; C & D Canal; Eastern Shore; Hollerith, Herman, Jr.; Log canoes; Mathews county, Va.; Old Point Comfort, Va.; Sailboats, commercial; Seafood Industry; Steamboats, Chesapeake Bay; Washington, DC; workboats, Chesapeake Bay. Griffith Dodson while researching the steamboat olive, once owned by the Dodson family.Biographical BackgroundThe Dodson family was prominent in St. Michaels history, especially in the 19th century. The family owned and operated a steamboat out of St. Michaels, Olive, a drug store, the St. Michaels Comet, and its members served as state senators and town commissioners (see ms 2, ms 12, ms 13).E. Griffith Dodson was born in Norfolk on April 30, 1884 and married Harriote Jones Winchester in 1913. He was the son of Robert Ad&lphus Dodson (1861 - 1913) and Julia E. Griffith. He started oft as a lawyer in Norfolk, looking after most of the Dodson family interests in the area. Dodson later became Vice-President and First Officer of the Seaboard Citizens National Bank and finished his career as Clerk of the House of Delegates, Richmond, Virginia. While serving as Clerk he became interested in historical research and published several works on the Capitol and the Virginia General Assembly. He also started to accumulate information on the steamboat Olive that was owned by Richard Stearns Dodson from 1876 to approximately 1891. Henry Clay Dodson acted as General Agent while Edward N. Dodson was the master. (see Weather Gauge, vol 21, no. 2)The papers were donated by his son, E. Griffith Dodson, Jr. Scope and ContentThe material includes hand-written and typed notes by E. Griffith Dodson, newspaper articles, photocopied documents, and correspondence regarding the career of the olive. Most of the dated material is from 1965.The Olive was built by the Atlantic Iron Works and Dock Company, Norfoolk', Virginia, in 1869 for Gilbert C. Walker. From 1876 to approximately 1891, she was owned by the Dodson family and traded between Baltimore and St. Michaels. The olive was sold to theDodson Papers, page 2the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company but was sunk in a violent storm on February 16, 1903 with the loss of 17 lives. She was later raised and renamed Hertford, owned by the same company, and was dismantled at Newport News in 1911.These papers are useful as they add considerable information to that already existing on the history of the olive, particularly in the latter years.Subjects:Dodson Family; Olive, Steamboats, Chesapeake Bay. | No image URL. | View | |||

| 48 | 0000.1100 | photographs | Herman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976) Photo Collection | 1890-1970 | This is a collection of many photographs, which have not been cataloged individually. Please review the attachments for specific information on the images.

Herman Hollerith, Jr.
